The timing belt on the 5VZ-FE 3.4L V6 must be replaced every 60,000 miles. This is the single most important maintenance item on 1st gen Tacomas. A failed timing belt will cause catastrophic engine damage.
Replace These Items Together
- Timing belt
- Water pump
- Idler pulleys (x2)
- Hydraulic tensioner
- Drive belts
- Thermostat and gasket (while you're in there)
Estimated Cost
- DIY: $150-250 in parts (Toyota OEM timing belt kit recommended)
- Shop: $600-1,000 including labor
Key Tips
- Always use the Toyota OEM kit or Aisin brand (they make the OEM)
- Mark TDC (top dead center) precisely before removing the old belt
