4th Gen Tacoma Serpentine Belt Replacement
Maintenance Guide
Serpentine Belt Replacement: 4th Gen Tacoma
The serpentine belt on the 4th gen Tacoma drives the alternator, A/C compressor, and water pump. Toyota recommends inspection every 60,000 miles and replacement as needed.
Symptoms of a Worn Belt
- Squealing noise on cold start or during acceleration
- Visible cracking, fraying, or glazing on the belt surface
- A/C performance decreasing
- Battery not charging properly
Replacement Steps
- Locate the belt routing diagram on the fan shroud or radiator support
- Take a photo of the current routing before removal
- Use a 14mm wrench or socket on the tensioner pulley to release tension
- Slide the old belt off the pulleys
- Route the new belt according to the diagram, leaving the tensioner for last
- Release the tensioner slowly to apply pressure to the new belt
- Start the engine and verify the belt tracks correctly on all pulleys
Tip: While the belt is off, spin each pulley by hand and listen for bearing noise. Replace any noisy idler pulleys at the same time.
