Rust Prevention: Keeping Your 1st Gen Alive
First generation Tacomas are between 22 and 31 years old. Rust is the number one killer of these trucks, especially in salt-belt states. With the right approach, you can keep your 1st gen on the road for decades more.
Annual Rust Prevention Routine
- Pressure wash the entire undercarriage in late fall before salt season
- Apply Fluid Film or Woolwax to the frame, crossmembers, leaf springs, and body seams
- Inspect bed mounting bolts, cab mounting bolts, and frame-to-body hardware
- Check inner fenders, rocker panels, and the lower doors for bubbling paint
- Treat any surface rust immediately — wire brush, rust converter, primer, and paint
Frame Inspection Points
- Rear frame sections near the spare tire carrier
- Front crossmember behind the front bumper
- Leaf spring mounting brackets and shackles
- Cab-to-frame mounting points
If you're in a rust-prone area and buying a used 1st gen, a thorough underbody inspection with a pick hammer is essential before purchase.
