Head Gasket Issues: 1st Gen Tacoma
The 3.4L V6 and especially the 2.4L/2.7L four-cylinder engines in early Tacomas can develop head gasket issues, though they are less common than in some other Toyota trucks of the era.
Symptoms
- Overheating with no visible coolant leak
- White, sweet-smelling exhaust smoke
- Milky residue under the oil filler cap
- Coolant level dropping without explanation
- Bubbles in the radiator overflow tank
Prevention
- Maintain proper coolant levels with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant
- Replace coolant every 30,000 miles (older formula) or as recommended
- Address overheating immediately — don't drive with a hot engine
- Replace the thermostat and radiator cap if they're original
If you suspect a head gasket issue, a combustion gas leak test (block test) is the most reliable diagnostic method.
