An oil change is supposed to be one of the simplest and most important things you can do to protect your Tacoma.

But what happens when something goes wrong during the service itself?

In my latest video, I talk about a reported 2024 Toyota Tacoma that experienced a serious oil filter problem at only around 5,000 miles after a dealer oil change.

Watch the video here:

This brings up something I think every Tacoma owner should be thinking about, whether you change your own oil or have the dealership do it.

Don't automatically assume everything is good just because someone else performed the service.

After an oil change, it's worth taking a couple of minutes to check things yourself. Look underneath the truck for leaks, verify the oil level, pay attention to any warning lights, and make sure nothing seems unusual during the first few drives.

A small problem involving the oil filter, drain plug, oil level, or another part of the service can turn into a much bigger problem if the engine loses oil pressure or oil faster than you realize.

The part that really interests me is how Tacoma owners handle their oil changes.

Do you trust the Toyota dealership to change your oil, use an independent shop, or do all of your oil changes yourself?

If you use a dealership or shop, do you inspect the truck afterward?

And for the 2024+ 4th Gen Tacoma owners, have you had any problems after an oil change, including leaks, loose filters, incorrect oil levels, or anything else that required another trip to the dealer?

I'd like to hear everyone's experiences.

This isn't about saying every dealership or technician does bad work. Mistakes can happen anywhere. The bigger takeaway is that it's your truck, and a quick inspection after any service could potentially catch a problem before it becomes an expensive one.

If you've had an oil-change-related issue with your Tacoma, post the year, mileage, what happened, and how Toyota or the shop handled it.

It could help another Tacoma owner know exactly what to check after their next oil change.
