Can't decide between a Tacoma and a 4Runner for my next purchase. I need something that handles the daily commute (40 min each way) but can also get me to trailheads on weekends.

The Tacoma bed is appealing for hauling gear, but the 4Runner's passenger space is better for the family. Anyone had both? What would you pick?

Had a '19 4Runner and traded it for a '22 Tacoma. The Tacoma is more capable off-road with the shorter wheelbase, and the bed is infinitely more useful. The 4Runner rides smoother on the highway though — that's the honest trade-off.

If you have kids or frequently carry passengers, 4Runner. If it's mostly you and maybe one other person, Tacoma all day. The bed changes everything for camping, hauling, and building out.
