I ran a ground tent for 2 years and switched to an iKamper Skycamp 3.0 on a Prinsu rack last year. Here's my honest comparison after 30+ nights in each:

  • Setup time: RTT wins hands down (5 min vs 15 min)
  • Sleep quality: RTT is better — built-in mattress and off the ground
  • Cost: Ground tent by a mile ($200 vs $4,000)
  • Wind: Ground tent is more stable in heavy wind
  • Weight/MPG: RTT adds ~120 lbs up high, noticeable on highway

Would I go back? No. The convenience is worth the cost if you camp frequently. But if you're out once a month, a quality ground tent is perfectly fine.

Great comparison. I'll add that RTTs suck in the rain if you need to pack up quickly. Wet tent going back in the shell on top of your truck = mold. Ground tent you just stuff in a dry bag.

Have you looked at the GFC Platform Camper? It's the best of both worlds but the price tag is brutal. Around $7k installed.
