Hey everyone, I'm looking to upgrade the armor on my 2022 Tacoma TRD Off-Road and I've narrowed it down to two options: RCI Metalworks full skid plate set or C4 Fabrication skids. The price difference is pretty significant - about $400 more for the RCI setup.

I do a lot of weekend warrior stuff in the Smoky Mountains and planning a Moab trip next spring. Current setup is stock suspension with BFGoodrich KO2s. Has anyone run both brands or have experience with either? I'm particularly interested in:

  • Fitment quality and ease of installation
  • Ground clearance differences
  • Protection level during real rock crawling
  • Long-term durability

The RCI plates look beefy but wondering if I'm paying for the name or if there's real value in the extra cost. Thanks for any input!

I've been running C4 Fabrication skids for about 18 months now and they've been solid. Did the Alpine Loop last summer and took some pretty good hits on the belly without any issues. The powder coating has held up well too.

That said, I've heard great things about RCI's reputation for quality. If you're planning serious rock crawling like Moab, the extra thickness might be worth it. C4's are definitely adequate for most trail use though, and the savings could go toward other upgrades.

RCI all the way! Yes, you pay more upfront but the 3/16" steel construction vs C4's thinner material makes a huge difference when you're dragging over sharp rocks. I learned this the hard way - had cheaper skids that got punctured on the Rubicon Trail.

The RCI plates also have better designed drain holes and the mounting hardware is top notch. Installation was straightforward with good instructions. Ground clearance is actually slightly better than stock despite the added protection.

Check out SmokyMtnTaco on YouTube - he did a comparison video that really shows the construction differences between brands.

Another vote for C4 Fabrication here. I think the RCI reputation is a bit overblown for the price premium. My C4 skids have taken abuse in Big Bend and Mojave Desert without any problems.

The key is proper installation - use blue Loctite on all bolts and torque to spec. I also added some sound deadening material on the inside to reduce road noise. For the money saved, I was able to get CBI Offroad sliders too which was a better overall protection package.
