Been running my 2020 TRD Off Road with basic bolt-ons for about 8 months now and I'm ready to take the next step. Currently have a K&N cold air intake and Borla ATAK exhaust, but I'm still wanting more power for those steep climbs in the Rockies.

I'm torn between two options:

  • OVTune ECU flash - Around $650, heard good things about their 3.5L V6 tune
  • Magnuson TVS1900 supercharger kit - About $4,800 but puts down serious power

Has anyone done the OV tune? I know it's not going to give me supercharger numbers, but for the price difference I could put that extra cash toward some Icon Stage 2 suspension. Thoughts?

I went with the OVTune on my '19 TRD Sport last year and honestly, it's been great for the money. You're not getting massive HP gains (maybe 15-20hp) but the throttle response improvement is night and day. Plus you get better shift points and the transmission feels way more responsive.

That said, if you're looking for serious power gains, the Magnuson is in a different league entirely. I've seen those kits put down 340+ whp. Just factor in that you'll probably want to upgrade your clutch if you're manual, and definitely budget for a retune.

Magnuson all the way if you can swing the budget. I installed mine about 6 months ago and it completely transformed the truck. Pulls like a freight train now, especially loaded down with camping gear.

Check out this install video that helped me a ton: SmokyMtnTaco Magnuson supercharger install walkthrough

Fair warning though - you will become addicted to that supercharger whine. And your gas mileage will take a hit, I'm down about 2-3 mpg in mixed driving.

Have you considered starting with the OVTune and seeing how you like it? It's not like the tune is going anywhere, and if you decide to go supercharged later you can always get a custom retune for the Magnuson setup.

I did exactly this - started with an ECU flash, then added the supercharger about a year later. The tune definitely woke up the truck and made it more enjoyable to drive while I saved up for the blower. Plus you'll learn a lot about how your truck responds to modifications before jumping into the deep end with forced induction.
