Manual transmission fluid change interval — Toyota says 100k, dealer says 30k?

I've got a 2023 Tacoma TRD Off-Road with the 6-speed manual and I'm getting conflicting advice on transmission fluid changes. Toyota's maintenance schedule says 100,000 miles for "severe service" conditions, but my dealer is pushing for every 30k miles at $180 a pop.

I do a fair amount of trail driving in the Smokies and some light rock crawling, so I'm definitely in the severe service category. But 30k seems excessive when Toyota engineering says otherwise. Has anyone actually seen transmission problems from following the factory interval? Or conversely, anyone wish they'd changed it sooner?

I'm at 45k miles now and the fluid still looks clean through the fill plug, but I'm torn between trusting the engineers vs. real-world preventative maintenance. What's everyone's experience been?

I split the difference and do mine every 60k miles. Had my 2018 manual up to 140k before I traded it in, and never had any transmission issues. The dealer pushing 30k intervals is just trying to make money — that's way more frequent than necessary unless you're literally submerging your truck in mud regularly.

That said, transmission fluid is cheaper than a new transmission, so I wouldn't wait the full 100k either. At 45k miles with off-road use, I'd probably change it now and then stick to 60k intervals going forward.

My buddy is a Toyota tech and he says the 100k interval is based on ideal conditions that most people don't actually drive in. Heavy towing, off-roading, stop-and-go traffic — all of that breaks down the fluid faster than highway cruising.

I've been doing mine every 50k miles on my 2020 TRD Sport manual. Takes about 20 minutes if you have ramps and costs maybe $40 in fluid. Worth the peace of mind, especially since manual transmissions are getting harder to find and I want to keep this truck running forever.
