Adding the OPENROAD cap to my 2025 Trailhunter blocked the factory digital rearview-mirror and bed-camera views, so I used GG OFFROAD’s relocation system to move those views to the rear of the cap.
But I took a different approach from the normal install. Instead of removing the original cameras from the truck, I bought a complete OEM Toyota third-brake-light/camera assembly and used the donor OEM cameras for the cap. My original factory camera assembly stays intact.
I also wired the cap’s third brake light and dome lighting using GG OFFROAD’s CHMSL brake tap and added a removable Deutsch-style connector for the cap power circuits.
The long-term goal is to be able to remove the bed cap and return the Tacoma to its original configuration without repeatedly removing cameras or dropping the headliner. GG OFFROAD is working with me on two additional short cables for the next phase of that reversible setup.
Watch here:
Here I’ve already mounted the digital rear view mirror camera into the mount, but we will go over that later
What would you prioritize in a removable topper setup—factory reversibility or the simplest possible installation?
