Hey everyone, hoping someone has run into this issue before. My 2020 TRD Off Road's backup camera just went completely black about a week ago. The screen still comes on when I shift into reverse, but it's just a black screen with the backup guidelines still visible.

I've tried the usual troubleshooting:

  • Cleaned the camera lens thoroughly
  • Checked all visible connections behind the tailgate
  • Did a hard reset on the infotainment system
  • Even disconnected the battery for 30 minutes

The truck has 65k miles and I've never had any electrical issues before. Has anyone dealt with this? Is it likely the camera itself or could it be a wiring issue? Really don't want to get bent over at the dealership if this is something I can tackle myself.

Had the exact same thing happen on my 2019 Sport at around 70k miles. Turned out to be the camera unit itself that failed. The wiring harness was fine, but the camera module just died. Good news is that it's actually pretty straightforward to replace if you're handy with tools.

You can get the OEM replacement camera from Toyota for about $180, or there are some aftermarket options on Amazon for around $80-100. The install is just removing the tailgate trim panel and swapping out the camera. Took me about an hour total. Way better than the $450 the dealer quoted me!

Before you replace the camera, check the connection at the body side too. On my 2020, I had a similar issue and it turned out to be corrosion in the connector where the tailgate harness plugs into the main body harness. It's located behind the left rear tail light area.

I cleaned up the connector with some electrical contact cleaner and applied dielectric grease, and the camera came right back to life. Worth checking that connection before spending money on a new camera!

This is actually a somewhat common issue on the 3rd gen Tacomas. SmokyMtnTaco on YouTube did a video on this exact repair a while back that might help you out.

Pro tip: If you do end up replacing the camera, consider upgrading to one of the aftermarket units that has better night vision capabilities. The factory camera is pretty mediocre in low light conditions anyway. I upgraded mine to a Diode Dynamics backup camera system and the difference is night and day, especially when backing up to hitch trailers in the dark.
