Hey Southwest crew! I just moved to Phoenix from back east and I'm itching to get my 2021 OR out for some proper desert camping. Back home I was used to forest service roads and established campgrounds, but this desert terrain is totally new to me.

I've got my truck set up with:

  • Bilstein 5100s with a 2.5" front lift
  • BFGoodrich KO2s in 265/70R17
  • Roof top tent and basic recovery gear

Looking for recommendations on dispersed camping spots within 2-3 hours of Phoenix that are Tacoma-friendly. I'm not looking for hardcore rock crawling, just good access roads to scenic camping with maybe some easy to moderate trails to explore. Any hidden gems you locals want to share?

Welcome to the desert! You're going to love it out here. For starters, I'd highly recommend Box Canyon Road near Florence. It's about an hour south of Phoenix and has tons of dispersed camping spots along washes with great mountain views. The road is well-maintained dirt that any stock Tacoma can handle.

Another favorite of mine is the Wickenburg area - tons of old mining roads and beautiful desert camping. Just make sure you have the Motor Vehicle Use Maps from the BLM website so you stay on legal routes.

Lake Pleasant Regional Park has some decent camping if you want something more established to start with. But for the real desert experience, head up to Crown King via the backway - it's a fun moderate trail that'll give you a taste of what your Tacoma can do. There are camping spots all along Senator Highway.

Pro tip: Download the FreeRoam app and Gaia GPS before you head out. Cell service gets spotty once you leave the valley!

Don't sleep on Quartzsite area if you can make it out that way. It's about 2 hours west but the camping is incredible, especially around the Plomosa Mountains. I took my '19 TRD Sport out there last month and found some amazing spots.

Just remember - desert camping means bringing ALL your water, pack out your trash, and let someone know your plans. The Sonoran Desert is beautiful but it doesn't forgive mistakes. Your setup sounds perfect for getting started though!
