Just finished a side-by-side weekend with my buddy who picked up a 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor while I'm running the new TRD Pro Tacoma. We hit some trails in the Mojave Desert and I wanted to share some honest observations.

The Ranger definitely has more power with that twin-turbo V6, but man does it drink fuel. I was getting better MPG even with the heavier foot needed for the Tacoma's power band. The Fox shocks on the Raptor are impressive, but honestly the TRD Pro suspension held its own on everything we threw at it.

Build quality felt solid on both trucks, but the Tacoma interior just feels more refined to me. The Ranger's infotainment was snappier though. Anyone else had a chance to compare these two head-to-head?

Great comparison! I cross-shopped these exact trucks and went Tacoma for the reliability factor. That twin-turbo setup in the Ranger makes me nervous for long-term ownership. Plus the aftermarket support for Tacomas is just unmatched - already planning some Icon Vehicle Dynamics upgrades and CBI Offroad bumpers.

How did they compare on the technical stuff? Rock crawling, approach/departure angles?

I've wheeled with a few Ranger Raptors and they're definitely capable, but they feel way too wide on tight trail sections. The Tacoma's narrower track width is such an advantage on places like the trails around Moab. That extra width might be nice for high-speed desert running, but for technical terrain give me the Taco every time.

Plus good luck finding Ranger-specific recovery gear and armor. The Tacoma ecosystem with companies like RCI Metalworks and Warn is just miles ahead.

Owned a Ranger before my Tacoma and the difference in dealer network is huge. Toyota service is available everywhere, especially important when you're overlanding in remote areas. Ford's truck dealers can be hit or miss depending on location.

That said, the Raptor is undeniably fast. If you're mostly doing high-speed desert runs it's hard to beat. But for versatility and daily driving comfort while still being trail-capable, Tacoma wins hands down. The resale value alone makes it worth it.
