Just got my 2019 TRD Pro back from the dealership after having the frame recall work completed (TSB 0087-19). Figured I'd share my experience since I know a lot of folks are dealing with this.

Background: Started noticing some surface rust on the frame rails near the rear axle about 6 months ago. Took it in for inspection and sure enough, fell under the recall parameters. Truck has 78k miles and I've been pretty good about washing the undercarriage after winter drives and trail runs.

Work performed:

  • Frame inspection and documentation
  • Rust treatment and coating application
  • Replacement of affected frame sections (passenger side rear rail)
  • Complete undercoating with corrosion inhibitor

Total time at dealer was 8 days. They provided a rental Camry which was... interesting after driving the Tacoma everywhere. Cost was completely covered under recall - didn't pay a dime.

Anyone else been through this process? Curious about long-term durability of the repair work.

Thanks for posting this! My 2018 is scheduled to go in next week for the same recall. Been worried about how long I'll be without my truck.

How does the undercoating look now? Is it the black rubberized stuff or something different? I do a lot of trail riding in the Great Smoky Mountains and want to make sure it'll hold up to rock scrapes.

Great timing on this post! Just went through the same thing with my 2020 TRD Off Road last month.

The new coating they use is actually pretty robust - it's a zinc-rich primer followed by a black urethane topcoat. Way better than the factory stuff. My frame looks better now than when I bought it new.

One tip: take photos of your frame before you bring it in. I had some scratches from my RCI skid plates and wanted to document that they weren't from the recall work. Dealer was cool about it but better safe than sorry.

Also, if you've got any aftermarket skids or sliders, they'll remove and reinstall them as part of the work. Mine came back torqued to spec and everything looked good.

This recall has been a nightmare for some folks but sounds like you had a good experience. My buddy's 2019 was at the dealer for almost 3 weeks because they had to order frame sections.

Did they give you any maintenance recommendations for the new coating? I've heard some people say you shouldn't pressure wash the undercarriage for the first 30 days while it fully cures.
