Just hit 60K miles on my 2019 TRD Off-Road and I'm planning to do the transmission fluid change myself this weekend. I know Toyota says the fluid is "lifetime" but after reading plenty of discussions here on Tacoma Planet, I'm convinced regular changes are the way to go.

I've got the Toyota ATF WS fluid ready to go, but I'm wondering about the process. Should I do a simple drain and fill or go for multiple cycles? Also, any tips on getting the temp right for checking the level? I've watched a few YouTube videos but would love to hear from anyone who's done this on a 3rd gen recently.

Planning to tackle this in my garage - already have the truck up on ramps and the drain pan ready. Just want to make sure I don't miss anything important!

Definitely the right call on changing it at 60K! I did mine at 55K on my 2018 and the fluid that came out was already pretty dark. For the process, I'd recommend doing three drain and fill cycles - you'll only get about 3-4 quarts out each time due to the torque converter holding fluid.

Make sure you're checking the level with the engine running and the trans at operating temp (around 140-160°F). The fill plug is your friend here - when it starts dripping out, you're good. Take your time and don't rush the temp check!

Good timing on this thread! I just did my 2020 TRD Sport at 65K miles last month. The multiple cycle approach is definitely worth it - here's what I learned:

  • First drain yielded about 3.8 quarts of pretty nasty fluid
  • Second drain was cleaner but still had some color to it
  • Third drain came out looking almost as clean as what went in

Pro tip: get yourself a fluid transfer pump if you don't have one. Makes filling through the side fill hole so much easier than trying to angle a funnel. Also, don't forget to reset your maintenance reminder if you're tracking it!

This is solid preventative maintenance right here. I've been doing mine every 50K miles since I bought my 2017 new, and the transmission still shifts like butter at 180K miles. The multiple drain and fill cycles are the way to go for sure.

One thing to add - make sure you have the truck level when you're doing the final fill and check. Even a slight incline can throw off your fluid level reading. I learned that the hard way on my first attempt and ended up slightly overfilled until I corrected it.
