Planning to hit the 16 creeks trail system near Middlesboro, KY next weekend with my 2019 TRD Off-Road. I've heard it's a solid intermediate trail with some decent water crossings and rocky sections.

What kind of pre-trip maintenance should I prioritize? My truck's at 85k miles and I'm due for some services anyway. Thinking about:

  • Differential service (never been done)
  • Air filter replacement
  • Maybe new spark plugs while I'm at it

Also wondering if anyone's run this trail recently - how's the trail condition after all the rain we've had? My BFGoodrich KO2s are getting close to replacement time but should have enough tread left for this trip.

Definitely do that diff service before you go - 85k is overdue for sure. I learned that lesson the hard way on a similar trail in Tennessee last year.

For 16 creeks specifically, I'd also check your CV boots and make sure your skid plates are tight. Those rocky creek beds will find any loose bolts. The water crossings aren't super deep but they're frequent, so fresh air filter is smart. If your KO2s still have decent tread depth, you should be fine - that trail is more about traction than aggressive lugs anyway.

I ran 16 creeks about three weeks ago and the trail condition was actually pretty good despite the wet weather. The creek levels were up but nothing crazy.

One thing I wish I'd done beforehand - check your transmission cooler lines if you have the auto. Mine started weeping right after some of the rougher articulation sections and I had to nurse it home. Not a huge deal but definitely killed the fun factor for the last few miles. At 85k you're right in that sweet spot where little stuff starts showing up after hard use.
