I've been building out my 2025 Tacoma Trailhunter for overlanding, and with the OPENROAD bed cap and rooftop tent already installed, there was one more piece I wanted to add.
A 270° awning.
Now, I've seen plenty of these things at overlanding shows and on other builds. They look great when they're all set up.
But here's what I wanted to know…
Is a 270° awning something you'll actually use, or is it just another expensive accessory hanging off the side of your truck?
So I installed the OPENROAD 270° awning on the Trailhunter and put it through its paces.
A few things I wanted to find out:
- How much usable shade does it really provide?
- Is setting it up and packing it away as convenient as it looks?
- How well does it work alongside the bed cap and rooftop tent?
- And most importantly, would I want to deal with it every time I set up camp?
There were a few things that caught my attention along the way.
And one thing in particular made me look at this setup a little differently.
I cover the installation, setup, takedown, and what I think about the whole arrangement after getting it on the truck.

For those of you running a 270° awning, do you use it as much as you expected? Or does it spend most of its life folded up on the truck?
I'm curious what everybody thinks.
